Google Promises More Emojis Coming To Android
And when and if an iOS user made a decision to send tacos, burritos, unicorns and even middle fingers emojis all at the same time, an Android user will never make sense of anything but an array of empty boxes confronting him on his phone screen. Google has promised to improve the selection of emojis for its mobile platform.
So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Android has responded quickly to requests from people asking for new emojis. Now Android users are wondering when they’ll get access to the same awesome emoji. Newly appointed Android SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer apologized on Twitter yesterday but wants everyone to know Google’s working on it. Of course, no specific dates or which specific Android version that will introduce the new emoji was mentioned, but hopefully they’re making this a priority given we’re now officially 2 Unicode updates behind.
It’s safe to say that Android will add the upcoming emojis via a new minor bug-centric software update for Marshmallow.
Apple launched its iOS 9.1 update for all iPhone and iPad owners, according to BGR. It’s unclear exactly how long it’ll take Google to incorporate the new emoji characters into Android, but hey, at least we know that Google’s on it! In fact, iOS now officially has every single emoji ever created, dating all the way back to Unicode 1.1 from 1993 – not a single one has been left out (despite a a movement to remove the gun emoji).
Rooted Android users who can’t wait for the official rollout of new emojis can download an app called Emoji Switcher. Apple has reported that it works closely with the Consortium to make updates to the standard, such as the recent move to boost emoji diversity.
