Google refutes claim Android Auto collects vehicle data
Engine Trend reports that the German auto maker ran with Apple’s infotainment framework over Google’s in its new 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S on the grounds that the Android Auto understanding requested an excessive amount of information be sent to the inquiry monster. “But there is an ethical one”, the report notes. As part of the agreement an automaker would have to enter with Google, certain pieces of data must be collected and mailed back to Mountain View, California. Porsche did not want to give away their secret that makes their high-end automobiles so special and especially to a company that could be a potential rival. While one could argue that this would allow Android Auto to better know the vehicle and its occupant to deliver a more optimized and personalized experience, but perhaps this information could be detrimental to Porsche’s uniqueness. “Moreover, giving such data to a multi-billion dollar corporation that’s actively building a vehicle, well, that is not good, either”. Apparently the in-car system can share information with the Android device such as GPS location as the the car’s system is often more accurate than the connected phone.
However in Porsche’s case, the carmaker has opted to go with Apple’s CarPlay and have recently explained why, which is something you might also want to take into consideration if you were to go for Google’s Android Auto.
However the publication criticized the selection since Apple’s CarPlay only checks if the car’s powertrain control module just to make sure that the vehicle is actually moving. In addition, drivers have to opt in to provide their car’s data to apps, including Google services and third-party apps.
