Google reorganises into new company called Alphabet
Sergey Brin, Page’s co-founder of Google, will become President of Alphabet and Eric Schmidt will be its Executive Chairman.
In a post titled “The New Age Alphabet: Google A to Google Z”, a Redditor shared an image they had put together of Google products, showing how together they could take over each of the 26 letters. Buffett is CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, a conglomerate that owns more than 80 subsidiary companies and lets each operate with substantial independence.
The new company will include all of Google’s current properties, with the largest of course being Google itself.
“He has really stepped up since October of last year, when he took on product and engineering responsibility for our internet businesses”, Page wrote. Google, for one. Also, X lab, the company’s secret research venture, and health-related ventures like Calico, focused on biology and longevity, and Life Sciences. It recently signed a deal with AncestryDNA to will evaluate anonymised data from millions of public family trees and a database of more than one million genetic samples.
Google fans needn’t worry however, as the firm’s core business including its search engine, Maps, YouTube, Android and other services will still fall under the same familiar brand.
“This new structure will allow us to keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities we have inside of Google”, said co-founder and CEO Larry Page in a blog post.
Other than the name of the new parent, and news of Pichai’s appointment as Google CEO, Page did not provide many details on any additional changes that would result from the reorganization. Page said he was impressed with his “progress and dedication to the company” and promised to continue to groom Pichai, who has been at Google since 2004. We also like that it means alpha-bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for.
Getting more ambitious things done.
We did a lot of things that seemed insane at the time. Google still exists and retains properties such as YouTube and Android but will be under the umbrella of parent company Alphabet. And we haven’t stopped there.
Page explained that “our model is to have a strong CEO who runs each business, with Sergey and me in service to them as needed”.
Alphabet will essentially become the holding company for Google’s growing portfolio of products, many of which were now branching heavily away from an online focus.
Alphabet has been described as a collection of companies, with Google – by far and away – being the biggest under their control.
Time magazine called Pichai Larry Pages right-hand man in a news report on the Google restructuring.
All of the news surrounding this is still developing, so we will be sure to have more information as it becomes available.
