Google’s Nest Thermostat Removed From Apple Stores
For a while it was interesting that despite the fact that Google now owns Nest that Apple actually continued to sell their products in their stores.
We’ve reached out to Nest and Apple for comment.
After the Nest disappeared from Apple’s retail outlets in early July, the company this week confirmed to Mashable that it had been pulled – without explaining why.
However, Jawbone trackers returned to the Apple Store in June, so we shouldn’t rule out the Nest’s return at some point. A Nest staffer noted that the products would be offered via Apple again in the coming weeks.
Last year at WWDC Apple laid out its plans for internet of things devices with new software and APIs in the form of HomeKit.
According to reports, although the thermostat was only recently discovered as missing from Apple’s product offerings, it was removed earlier this month. This is the second time that Apple will be stopping the sale of the device, but this time, it looks like it is permanent. However, Apple has been diving deeper into the smart home industry with the creation of HomeKit, a framework based on the company’s iOS mobile operating system that consolidates the controls of smart home devices.
Naturally Apple would want to promote products that relied on HomeKit since it would help the ecosystem grow, so by removing Nest from the picture, customers would be more inclined to purchase HomeKit compatible devices. And during the legal imbroglio between Bose and Apple-owned Beats, the former company’s products were temporarily removed from Apple stores. Fadell, termed as the “godfather of the iPod”, recruited several Apple employees.
In the meantime, you can buy Nest from Google and other retailers. In the end, it was Google that bought Nest for .2 billion.
