Google’s new Chromecast adapter brings Ethernet
Chromecast is single-handedly responsible for spawning the HDMI media stick category. That said, it’s still not a ideal solution for all situations although a new accessory certainly helps matters. But if you plug in the Ethernet adapter, it’ll not only provide power to the Chromecast, but also let you plug in an Ethernet cable so you can connect your Chromecast directly to your router with a wired connection.
Google has quietly released a helpful addition to its popular Chromecast streaming stick: The Ethernet Adapter for Chromecast, which popped up in Google’s online store Wednesday, makes it possible to hardwire the streaming dongle to solve Wi-Fi connectivity issues.
The powered accessory plugs into the USB port on your Chromecast. It’s that simple.
Google is listing the adapter for just $15.
Ever since its launch, the Chromecast has required you to connect it to Wi-Fi in order to have it get content onto your TV.
Remember ethernet? It’s that technology that can transmit an Internet signal to devices through a cable – so long as they have an ethernet port, that is. Assuming it shows up again with stock, Google wants $15 for it. That’s not a bad price for a power/ethernet adapter, but it seems a bit mad knowing that the actual Chromecast unit runs just $35. No word yet on when it’ll be back in stock or when it’ll be offered outside of the USA.
