Google X plans to launch drone delivery by 2017
Amazon has detailed its plans to use drones to deliver products directly to customers, claiming that its octocopters could deliver 2.3 kilograms of goods within 30 minutes of an order being placed. The announcement was made by Vos at an air traffic convention organized in Washington.
The new group plans to meet this week to develop recommendations on a streamlined registration process and minimum requirements for registering unmanned aircraft.
David Vos, the leader of Project Wing, said Alphabet Inc.
Online retailers such as Amazon, Alibaba and others are also experimenting with drone delivery. Different users have radically different needs: photo drones from DJI, flown by anyone with a rich uncle, are going to work in a vastly different space to 20kg delivery drones operated by Amazon’s supercomputer.
“Working together we can get to this future I think surprisingly quickly”, he tells the camera. The Atlantic reported back a year ago that Google was testing out an unconventional design called a tail sitter – a hybrid of a helicopter and plane, which takes off vertically and spins around for a more horizontal position to fly around. At the very least, keep in mind that any outcome depends on decisions as-of-yet unmade by the FAA in regard to regulating drones’ use of airspace. Although the FAA has yet to codify its regulations about drone use, all companies in the U.S. that want to use drones for a few sort of commercial purpose-whether that’s taking photos for a realtor or testing out a grocery-delivery service-must apply for an exemption through the FAA.
But Why is Google apparently more interested in offering Drone delivery as service?
Drone deliveries would be carried out by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) flying under altitudes of 500 feet. Google also sees the technology as a way to deliver much required medicines and supplies in emergencies like natural disasters. The first prototype that was flown in Australia was roughly 1.5 meters wide and 0.8 meters tall, which has four-propellers that resembles the standard consumer drone look that are in the market.
