GOP angst about Trump shows concern over changing electorate
Romney and other GOP topshots have publicly said they will stay away from the Republican convention where Trump will be officially unveiled as the party’s flag bearer.
Trump responded by tweeting, “I am getting bad marks from certain pundits because I have a small campaign staff. But small is good, flexible, save money and number one!”
“I don’t want to see trickle-down racism”, he said. “I don’t want to see a president of the United States saying things which change the character of the generations of Americans that are following”.
The GOP will keep a watchful eye on a high-powered business and politics conference in Utah this week for signs Mitt Romney may bow to pressure from the establishment Republicans to throw his hat in the ring as a third-party candidate. “Presidents have an impact on the nature of our nation, and trickle-down racism, trickle-down bigotry, trickle-down misogyny – all these things are extraordinarily unsafe to the heart and character of America”. “And I think that’s very risky”.
But Romney was also challenged by some questioners who were trying to whip up support for Trump.
As many have done in the past few months, Blitzer asked Romney about the possibility of running as a third party candidate.
Trump’s campaign spending has totaled a little over $56 million, a meager sum compared to Hillary Clinton’s $179 million in expenses, according to her May 2016 FEC monthly filing. “But my choice is different than that of the other people, and I’m certainly not going to argue with them about their choice”.
Romney’s remarks on Saturday follow an interview he gave to Blitzer the day before in which he also discussed his disappointment in Trump’s primary opponents. The former MA governor has said he is not interested, but is said to be keeping close tabs on the intensifying race.
