GOP Assembly members Jacque, Kleefisch seek ban on selling fetal body parts
A pair of Republican state representatives is proposing a ban on the sale of fetal body parts in Wisconsin.
Nicole Safar, lobbying director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, said that the legislation and the recent criticism were a politically motivated attack on her group. “But now that the list is down, the world will not know how many more corporations will ask to be taken off the list of Planned Parenthood supporters”.
“Planned Parenthood, with more than 700 health centers, is a trusted health care provider for 2.7 million women each year”, Debra Ness, president of the national partnership, told allies in an email Friday.
“The selling of baby parts is merely the latest incident of exploitation”, Syracuse rally organizer Caroline Bennett, a Cornell University student, said in a statement.
The rallies are in response to recently released undercover videos that capture Planned Parenthood officials discussing the harvesting of fetal organs and prices associated with their disbursement to research facilities.
The hidden-camera videos are the product of a sting operation from the Center for Medical Progress, a California-based group opposed to abortion.
The sale of fetal tissue is against federal law, but not donations of tissue to non-profit scientific researchers with the mother’s consent.
The videos have prompted an investigation by Congress to determine whether Planned Parenthood’s abortion practices violated any federal laws.
“They’ve been out to get Planned Parenthood for as long as I can remember”, Pelosi said. Planned Parenthood has said they have done nothing illegal.
Planned Parenthood says the measures would restrict women’s access to health care.
“Mister Speaker, Planned Parenthood has blood on its hands”.
“Rep. Jacque supports policies like a constitutional ban on birth control and criminalizing all abortion, so it’s no surprise that he is advancing these initiatives”, Safar said.
