GOP Debate: Carly Fiorina Addresses Donald Trump’s “Look at That Face” Insult
A day after a major conservative group, the Club for Growth, launched a series of ads targeting Trump, several of his rival candidates at the debate in California aggressively attacked the man who leads the polls of the Republican race.
Other candidates quickly jumped in. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said, “We don’t need an apprentice in the White House, we have already have one”.
Senator Paul wasn’t the only conversation on looks. His response was lame and, more critically, a retreat: “She’s got a lovely face, and she’s a attractive person”, he said. Trump winced as the question was asked.
Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, meanwhile, labeled Trump a “wonderful entertainer”, before promising that the 2016 campaign would reveal the “judgment and temperament of every single one of us”.
When the anchor throws to Carly Fiorina for her reaction to Trump’s momentum, Trump’s expression sours in schoolboy disgust as the camera bores in on Fiorina. Trump last week was quoted as saying of her: “Look at that face. Would anyone vote for that?” he said.
Nice moment for Marco Rubio as the question on immigration comes to him.
“I’d like you to take the camera off me and put it on the audience”, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said as he launched into the opening statement.
Trump said he would learn more about foreign policy issues once he was elected president.
Trump responded with another jab.
“I think if people are looking for someone who is truly going to shake things up and wreak havoc on Washington, they want someone who’s got real solutions and someone who is truly tested”, Walker said last week.
Bush defended his choice, joking that he had been speaking English throughout the entire debate. “You have to do this with a steady hand, and I believe I have those skills”, Bush said. I got along with Clinton and everybody.
Bush also asked Trump to apologize to his Mexican-born wife after Trump retweeted criticism that Bush “has to like the Mexican illegals because of his wife”.
TRUMP WEAK NIGHT: Trump at the start did a unusual pivot, picking on Sen.
“It’s time for Republicans to stand up and fight for our principles”, Jindal said, adding that he wanted term limits and other reforms.
Trump objected, saying the accusations were totally false.
A poor showing on Bush’s part could just be another blip on the election timeline that might not prove fatal, said Steven Brams, professor of politics at New York University.
This did not go well because Trump went into full Art Of The Deal mode and moved to shut Jeb down, frustrating the former Florida governor by the end of their short segment.
Carson at times seemed unsure of his own positions on issues. He even donated $50,000.
The contrast between Trump, a political novice, and Bush, the son and brother of presidents, has come to typify the broader battle within the Republican Party.
