GOP governors gather amid push for ‘disruptive change’
The panel discussion was part of the 2 day conference here in Orlando that is being hosted by Florida Governor Rick Scott, who participated in a press conference with his fellow governors following the afternoon panel discussion.
This week, Haley could be elected vice chair of the Republican Governors Association. There will be two races for governor during Walker’s 2017 term.
Now, those ambitions have been put on hold and, instead, the Republican governors have been joined by Vice President-elect Pence.
“It’s a formidable task”. But even if Democrat Roy Cooper’s lead holds and he defeats incumbent Pat McCrory, the GOP will hold governorships in 33 states, the most in almost a century.
Instead, they said they’re thrilled that the GOP controls both Congress and the White House. “I think it’s going to be good for Florida, because when we have an issue, we can have a conversation with him, and he’s a results-oriented guy”, Scott said.
“The empire will strike back”, said Scott, referencing the title of one of the “Star Wars” movies.
GOP governors are likely to want sweeping changes to Medicaid, education and transportation.
But while some Republican governors may not have shared the same level of enthusiasm for Trump they said multiple times Tuesday that they were looking ahead to the changes they expect to come in the next few months.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said he’s “completely thrilled” that the GOP fully controls Congress with “someone of our own stripe, Mike Pence”, guiding Trump in the White House. Some, like Ohio’s John Kasich, vigorously opposed it. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, the association’s incoming chairman, exited the presidential race in 2015, portraying Mr Trump as risky to the party and the country.
Moore noted Haley spent a lot of time on the road a year ago, helping elect other GOP governors. Arlinghaus said he’ll help lead budget efforts between now and the inauguration but doesn’t plan to work full-time in Sununu’s administration.
He added, “As long as we don’t go off on weird issues – if we continue to focus on positive reforms”. “But no matter what your opinion was of the person, the possibilities are endless now that we have a Republican president, a Republican House, a Republican Senate, a vast Republican majority when it comes to governors and state leaders across America”.
The Republican Governors applauded the Trump Administration’s plans to partner with states and remove burdensome regulations that stunt job growth. He offered no specific details into what would replace President Barack Obama’s signature health care overhaul, but he pledged to work with Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on an alternative.
Before this year, Martinez was constantly hailed as a new face for a more diverse Republican Party. Of those incumbents, 11 are Republican.
