GOP Leaders Make Peace With Trump In Favor Of ‘Unified Republican Government’
GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan said the president-elect Donald Trump “just earned a mandate”.
“Donald Trump heard a voice out in this country that no one else heard”, Ryan said in remarks delivered in Janesville, Wisconsin. Collins said there was no lingering frustration with leadership’s handling of Trump’s candidacy, and that members of Trump’s team have been reaching out to Republicans who didn’t support the nominee to assure them there will be no repercussions or ill will.
Ryan said that the new Congress will be ready to send a bill repealing Obamacare – which now covers 20 million Americans – to President Trump.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., established herself as a powerful, savvy speaker from 2007 to 2011 as the first woman ever in the office, securing the votes for President Barack Obama’s 2010 health care law.
They have followed up on that, The Hill notes, including calling Ryan a hypocrite for opposing Trump’s border wall while building a wall around his own mansion in Janesville, Wisconsin.
The Trump-Ryan relationship will be one of the most intriguing – and consequential – in the coming months as the president-elect seeks to put his stamp on Washington.
Incumbent congressman John Mica, of Florida’s 7th congressional district, gets a hug from his wife, Patricia, after conceding defeat to Democratic challenger Stephanie Murphy, at the Republican Party of Seminole County, Fla., Election Watch event in Altamonte Springs, near Orlando, Fla., Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016.
“We will work hand-in-hand” on the GOP agenda, he added. But as the election neared, Ryan became more vocal for Trump. GOP-held New Hampshire remained too close to call on Wednesday morning, but even if Democrats eked out a win there it would not make a difference.
Ryan credited Trump for helping enough GOP House candidates win to keep a solid majority in the House. The plan, which House Republicans used an election platform, calls for initiatives that include repealing and replacing Obamacare, reforming the US tax code and scaling back federal regulations on industry. “We won more seats than anyone expected”, Ryan said.
“We would like to see the country go in a different direction and intend to work with [Trump] to change courses.to change the course for America”.
The Republican majority in the House is likely to be smaller than its current majority, but not by as much as recent opinion surveys had predicted. He succeeded John Boehner as Speaker of the House of Representatives past year.
During this victory speech in New York, Trump said it was time “for Americans to bind the wounds of division”. The president-elect could lean on the speaker’s expertise on these issues, but he would need to get past the bad blood he had with Ryan, who he just weeks ago called “weak and ineffective”. Trump responded by supporting Ryan’s primary opponent and excoriating Ryan on Twitter. Holcomb, a former state Republican Party chairman, had had been appointed to the state’s No. 2 spot by Gov. Mike Pence and later was nominated as his replacement when Pence dropped his re-election bid in July to run for vice president.
