Gordon reaches 200 hits, Phillies clinch another last-place finish in Marlins
In the days following Sunday’s season finale at Citizens Bank Park, Aaron Harang will return home to San Diego and discuss his future with his wife and three young children.
Philadelphia (62-97) needs one more win to avoid its first 100-loss season since 1961. The outfielder also set a career-high in hits by going 5-for-5 in Game 1 and had hits in eight consecutive at-bats to tie the Marlins’ club record. The rookie will get that chance when he starts the second game of Saturday’s double-header against Miami. The Marlins have not swept a doubleheader in more than seven seasons with the last instance occurring May 25, 2008 against San Francisco.
“He said he’s ready to play”, Mackanin said, “so we’re going to get a look at him”. “The pitching staff did a great job this week, and if they can continue to do that, we’ll keep under 100”. Despite a 4.86 ERA this season, he does, however, feel he has more left in the tank. The 26-year-old Atlanta native held Miami to two runs (one earned) in five frames in a no-decision on September 23. “I tried to do what I needed to do to get out there every fifth day, and talking to a few of these younger guys, trying to lead by example. After we have those meetings in late October, we’ll have a better idea of what the plan is”. Harang’s second-half performance, which featured a 6.11 ERA, overshadowed an impressive first two months to the season when he posted a 2.02 ERA through his first 11 starts. Miami initially jumped out to a four-run advantage, but that was erased by the fourth inning. The 25-year-old Washington State product gave up three runs over 12 innings without factoring into the decision in either of his last two outings.
Will this season have been worth it if the Phillies get MLB’s top draft pick? The right-hander didn’t make it out of the first inning Wednesday against the New York Mets and was charged with five runs before the Phillies rallied 7-5 win. Although the Marlins tacking on a run in the fourth, the Phillies were able to overcome the 4-0 deficit to eventually take the lead, though a Ken Giles blown save in the ninth inning cost them the win. He became the first Marlins player since Hanley Ramirez in 2007 to record 200 hits.
The 37-year-old free-agent-to-be Harang is uncertain if he will pitch in 2016.
Miami’s Dee Gordon, hitting.329, trails Washington’s Bryce Harper by two points in the NL batting race.
Yelich was 5 for 5 in the first game, a 7-6 victory, then hit safely in his first three at-bats in the second. He’s 2 for 13 lifetime against Harang and 0 for 3 versus Asher.
