Gostisbehere’s goal in OT lifts Flyers over Hurricanes 4-3
He changed direction at the right faceoff circle, using Shayne Gostisbehere as a screen to help him beat Neuvirth through the five-hole – a goal reminiscent of Keith Primeau’s legendary game-winner in 5OT against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Carolina re-took the lead when Skinner notched a second goal, batting the puck out of mid-air on a power play with Scott Laughton in the penalty box for interference. This seemed to ignite a spark in the Flyers because shortly after, Sean Couturier(4) (Voracek(16) Read(4)) scored a wacky goal that ricocheted of multiple Hurricanes and ultimately into the net. With 12 goals with the man advantage, Faulk looks to fuel the Hurricanes to their third straight victory on Tuesday when they conclude a four-game road trip against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Skinner tied the game when he skated to the middle of the ice, dodging hits along the way, and zipped a shot past Michal Neuvirth.
Skinner tied the game at 3 midway through the third period.
Coach Dave Hakstol had typically alternated between Neuvirth and Steve Mason, but he gave Neuvirth a start on back-to-back nights after Mason yielded three goals on 10 shots last Tuesday and was pulled early in the second period. Skinner then deftly deflected the puck out of midair for Carolina’s eighth power-play tally in the last six games.
After scoring 22 goals and 81 points last season, the 26-year-old has just one goal and 16 points in 30 games this year.
For the rest of the period the Flyers were trying to play catch-up, but Voracek’s new line was playing well and had half of the Flyers’ six shots in the first period. Instead, it bounced off Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin and into the net, giving Philadelphia their first lead of the game.
The Flyers responded only 58 seconds later when Gostisbehere broke up a play in the neutral zone and the Flyers’ top line, Voracek’s usual trio, went the other way.
After a feed from Michael Raffl, Schenn’s one-timer from the slot knotted the score at 2-2 with 15:25 left in the second.
Jakub Voracek led a 2-on-1 rush down the right wing into the Carolina zone.
NOTES: The teams will complete their four-game season series on February 23 at Carolina.
Philadelphia Flyers’ Brandon Manning, left, and Carolina… The Flyers’ Wayne Simmonds fought Brad Malone with 6:47 left in the second period following Malone’s knee-to-knee check on Michael Raffl.
