Gov. Abbott: Texas will not accept Syrian refugees
Two USA states have said they will not allow the resettlement of Syrian refugees following the terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 129 people on Friday.
“Neither you nor any federal official can guarantee that Syrian refugees will not be part of any terroristic activity”, Abbott, a Republican, wrote. At least one of the Paris terrorists was a Syrian refugee who had recently entered Europe.
Texas, Arkansas, MI and Alabama governors have already announced they will not accept any refugees from Syria.
“Refugees are the single most scrutinized and vetted individuals to travel to the United States”, McCullough said “These knee-jerk reactions stoke fear and bigotry, and have no place in this great nation”.
Obama, for his part, seems unfazed and said at a press conference today that he remains committed to helping Syrian refugees. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and all those affected in France tonight”.
Further, I and millions of Americans implore you to halt your plans to accept more Syrian refugees in the United States. No decisions are final on numbers or locations for refugees, but the Detroit area stands out for its large and well-established Arab-American population. President Obama on Monday reaffirmed his desire to accept 10,000 refugees over the next year.
And just to be abundantly clear, the refugees in Syria are fleeing ISIS and its brutality.
Over the weekend, Abbott tweeted a picture of the French flag hanging from the Governor’s Mansion alongside the Texas and US flags. Reducing or cutting admissions because of fear, Mitchell added, “is only feeding into what the attackers want”.
