Gov. signs bill banning powdered alcohol in New York
New York made the move to ban powdered alcohol, or “palcohol”, throughout the state.
“I am proud to sign this legislation that will keep powdered alcohol off the shelves and out of the wrong hands”, Cuomo said in a statement.
Supporters of the bill contend powdered alcohol increases access to alcoholic beverages for underage drinkers.
They also fear that if ingested or mixed incorrectly it could lead to unsafe levels of intoxication.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, this year introduced legislation to ban powdered alcohol nationwide. We are all well aware of the unfortunate price that is paid when our children and our communities are gripped by substance abuse and addiction – promising lives are shattered, stable homes are turned upside down, and neighborhoods are left searching for solutions.
Mark Phillips, CEO of Palcohol, a powdered alcohol startup. The company initially struggled to get federal approval to sell Palcohol, but it is now marketing several varieties including vodka, rum and several cocktail flavors. “Kids can stash Palcohol in their pocket when they leave the house for a party and their parents would never know the difference”.
