Gov. Snyder, Flint mayor to discuss city’s water
Sen. Dick Durbin of IL, the No. 2 Democrat, said Republicans would be put in an uncomfortable position if they don’t support the Democrats’ plan.
He wouldn’t give details of the legislation but said it will be unveiled Thursday by the two Democratic senators from Michigan, Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters. The woman’s children have rashes, and she herself has been experiencing hair loss, says Magdaleno, but she was drinking the water and bathing her kids in it. That’s because she didn’t know any better: “She had no idea about the water situation”. The Flint crisis originates from the city’s decision to switch to the Flint River as its main water supply in a cost-cutting move, one that deteriorated the city’s lead-lined pipes and sickened many of its residents.
In reality the lead in the water is from the pipes in Flint.
“American Disaster: The Crisis in Flint” is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. Wednesday from the beleaguered Genesee County city that has garnered national attention.
Susan Hedman, the head of the Midwest region of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, resigned last week over the water contamination crisis after she minimized an EPA memo that said tests had shown high levels of lead in the city’s water. But the damage to the pipes means lead will keep getting into Flint’s water, Henderson said.
People across the country are reaching out to help the city, now in a state of emergency, and RVA is no exception.
“We’re all children of God, and we’re supposed to look out for one another”, she said. You would have to send 200 bottles a day, per person, to cover what the average American (we are Americans in Flint) needs each day.
EPA recommends that residents continue to use filters or drink bottled water and if necessary, contact their local health provider to have themselves or their children tested for lead. It alleges the city is not providing comprehensive, reliable information to identify locations with lead lines and is under-testing homes with a higher risk of lead exposure. The money would also replace plumbing fixtures in schools with lead problems and help Flint with unpaid water bills. She added that he will be “fully independent”, report to her and get paid through private donations. Where will their drinking water come from, how will they bathe, how will they deal with possible medical issues months and years from now? As governor, Snyder should have been more engaged the moment he learned that residents were complaining about the water.
Snyder also announced Wednesday that a close adviser, Flint native Rich Baird, would run a new state office in Flint. Retired Detroit FBI chief Andrew Arena also will join the investigation into whether any MI laws were violated in the process that created a major public health crisis for Flint residents.
Members will serve three-year terms expiring December 31, 2018.
A new federal lawsuit over Flint’s water contamination seeks to force city and state officials to resolve violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act, demanding they replace all of the lead pipes in the city’s water system to ensure safe drinking water.
In the town of almost 100,000, there are 15,000 to 20,000 service lines that contain lead.
It demands people of Flint get a new, state of the art water distribution program. Two seek class-action status and financial compensation; another asks a judge to declare that users do not have to pay their water bills. Concerned Pastors for Social Action is named as a co-plaintiff to the complaint, as is the Natural Resources Defense Council.
