Gov. Walker raised about $7.4 million in run for president
Walker’s campaign finance report filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission shows that both Matt and Alex were paid roughly $1,500 a month by the campaign. But he tells Milwaukee radio talk show Charlie Sykes that if he runs and wins, he’d rule out seeking the presidency in 2020 while trying to run Wisconsin at the same time. Walker officially entered the race in mid-July, although he had been traveling the country extensively the first six months of the year. Walker dropped out of the race on September 21, unable to sustain financially a candidacy that had soared early, raised and spent money aggressively and then faced plummeting polling and donations.
Walker’s fundraising was solid and on par with other Republicans who remain in the presidential race.
But Walker spent $6.4 million in the recent quarter – a burn rate of 86 percent. Walker raised half as much as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and a third as much as retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
Democrat Hillary Clinton led the way in the third quarter with $28 million raised, to rival Bernie Sanders’ $26 million. Walker’s administration said last week that groups connected with Walker had paid about $58,000 of $125,000 in security expenses.
Walker also reports owing about $76,000 for online advertising, $10,000 for communications consulting and $44,000 for event staging costs.
