Gove says UK’s next leader should be a “Leaver”
The pair worked closely together for Vote Leave during the European Union referendum campaign and were widely expected to launch a joint bid for the Tory leadership – with Mr Johnson set to become Prime Minister and Mr Gove offering his services as Chancellor.
Allies of Mr Johnson said that Mr Gove had not even told the former London mayor that he was intending to stand as leader.
Gove and Johnson worked closely together on the successful drive to leave the E.U. Cameron, who led the campaign to remain in the alliance, announced his resignation after voters chose a Brexit, 52 percent to 48 percent.
“I enjoyed working with Boris during the referendum campaign, I think he has great talents and great abilities but you need something else to be prime minister, you need that grit, that executive authority, that sense of goal, that clarity”.
Mrs May also won the support of the Daily Mail newspaper and appeared to have taken an early lead in the crucial race to win the allegiance of MPs to secure her place on the shortlist of two that will be voted on by party members. Johnson himself hinted he saw it as treason, hiding a quote from Shakespeare’s play about political murder, “Julius Caesar”, in his speech announcing his decision not to stand on Thursday.
South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes, who campaigned for a “No” vote in last month’s referendum, is to back Justice Secretary Michael Gove to succeed David Cameron, both as Tory leader and Prime Minister.
He told BBC One’s Andrew Marr show: “I’ve taken some hard decisions, but I’ve always taken those because I’ve put my country and my principles first”.
Rivals Stephen Crabb, Andrea Leadsom and Liam Fox are also in the running to lead the Conservative Party and become United Kingdom prime minister.
He claimed that “I did nearly everything I could not to be a candidate for leadership of this party”.
Johnson, said Lord Heseltine, was like “a general who marches his army to the sound of the guns and the moment he sees the battleground he abandons it …”
“I am clear: I will ensure that we honor the instructions the British people have given us”, he said.
According to reports from the BBC, the inner circle of the Conservative party is none too thrilled with Mr Gove’s unexpected candidacy. In these challenging times, I firmly believe she has the experience and credibility to be an excellent Prime Minister.
May was a supporter of Britain’s continued European Union membership, albeit a low-key one, but she could not avoid referring to the referendum result as she announced her candidacy Thursday morning, shortly before Johnson spoke.
“I think it was a distraction, we need Brexit for grown-ups and we need to be talking about the big issues”.
London- The battle for the Conservative leadership started with two surprises on Thursday.
The result of the Conservative leadership race will be announced on September 9.
“Put simply, the best person to lead Britain out of the European Union is someone who argued to get Britain out”, Gove said.
