Governor-Elect Bevin to Alter Marriage
Bevin has promised to eliminate kynect, the state-based exchange where more than 100,000 people have purchased private health insurance plans with the help of federal subsidies.
Governor-elect Matt Bevin has vowed to protect a county clerk’s religious objections to same-sex marriage.
Current Governor Steve Beshear has said little about the issue except that he wouldn’t call a special session to deal with the issues of marriage licenses because it would “cost hundreds of thousand of dollars of taxpayers’ money”.
Whether Bevin can legally take the clerks names off the licenses is still in question. “The argument that that can’t be done is baloney – we’ve already changed those forms three times, for crying out loud”.
Among other claims, the appeal says that Davis’ decision to deny marriage licenses did not pose a “substantial burden” to couples because they could have gotten licenses elsewhere in Kentucky. She removed her name, all references to the Rowan County Clerk’s office, and included a disclaimer saying that the licenses were being issued pursuant to a federal court order.
“Gov.-elect Bevin’s impending executive order is a welcome relief for Kim Davis and should be for everyone who cherishes religious freedom”, Staver said in a statement.
