Governor’s attorney general pick is Kane’s ex-chief deputy
It gave Kane a new ally in an office in which many top staffers had turned against her.
In nominating General Beemer, Governor Wolf, as would be expected, is complying with the governor’s express duties under the Act.
“I’m proud of closing the loophole on guns and keeping the Pa. Lottery in Pennsylvania, over 500 child predator arrests, and you know, we’ve been nationally recognized for our war on drugs and I hope they remember we really tried our best”, Kane said.
She said she loved her job and she’s proud of the work she’s done, but it’s time for her and Pennsylvanians to move forward. She was convicted of two felony counts of perjury and seven misdemeanor counts of abusing the power of her office.
A jury convicted Kane, a former Lackawanna County prosecutor who was elected attorney general in 2012 and was considered a rising star among Democrats, of the charges late Monday after hearing five days of testimony, finding she orchestrated the illegal disclosure of secret grand jury information to the media and then engaged in acts created to hide and cover up her conduct. She also threatened to jail Kane if she retaliated against the once-trusted aides who testified against her.
Kane made a number of controversial hires and promotions during her tenure, including selecting as her chief of staff a man who had been the target of sexual-harassment complaints.
Castor had said he would not serve as a rubber-stamp for Kane’s policies and that he would work to restore the integrity of the office.
NORRISTOWN One day after a jury labeled her a convicted felon, Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Granahan Kane learned her fate will be sealed come October.
On Tuesday, Castor stirred controversy by saying he was pondering arresting Joshua Morrow, a witness against Kane who testified under an immunity deal. Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele asked.
When Beemer left the agency, Kane promoted Castor to fill his position as first deputy. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported then Beemer had “earned a reputation for being an independent voice within the increasingly dysfunctional Attorney General’s Office”.
In 2010, Mr. Beemer left the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office to engage in a private practice focused on plaintiffs’ environmental toxic tort cases and white collar criminal defense.
On Monday night, a Montgomery County jury convicted Kane of all nine counts against her, including perjury, obstruction and official oppression.
The governor also said that, based on his talks with Senate leaders in both parties, he was confident that Beemer “will be confirmed expeditiously”.
Beemer took on some of the office’s major legal decisions and openly clashed with Kane after the state Supreme Court suspended her law license last fall.
Not long after that testimony, Kane tapped Castor as her second-in-command.
“I don’t know what’s next, but I do know somebody has told me that your future is always brighter than your past”, Kane said.
“We all agreed in the jury box: Bruce Beemer, he was telling the truth the whole time”, Galasso said.
