Governor says Fox Valley will benefit from Foxconn plant
Foxconn’s plant will produce liquid-crystal display panels, or LCDs, that are used in televisions and computer screens.
Walker said part of wooing Foxconn to Wisconsin included meetings with chancellors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW-Milwaukee and the president of Gateway Technical College to talk about training opportunities so graduates would be prepared to work at the plant.
Foxconn’s estimate on jobs was more conservative.
President Trump announced the news of this investment during a ceremony in White House on July 26, Wednesday.
Representative Gordon Hintz is optimistic about the Foxconn deal, but hopes the incentive package comes with at least some requirements.
Despite these worries, some high-ranking officials outside of the state government praised the deal Wednesday for the anticipated economic impact. “This right here shows actual results”, said Ryan, a Republican who represents Wisconsin.
“Thank you to my friend, one of the great businessmen anywhere in the world, Terry Gou”, Trump said. If both sides deliver on their promises, it could cost Wisconsin up to $1m per job, according to calculations by Bloomberg BusinessWeek writer Tim Culpan. He also stated that the LCD manufacturing factory in Wisconsin would be set up by the year 2020. It has yet to be built.
While many people think first of Wisconsin for its agriculture, tourism and manufacturing, its tech sectors have grown steadily over time and provide support for the “big three” in a variety of ways.
But the decision to build the plant in Wisconsin also stemmed from $3 billion in state economic incentives over 15 years if Foxconn invests $10 billion in the state and ultimately adds 13,000 jobs.
While the announcement suggests that the new factory will be a production-line affair, Foxconn said as recently as December 2016 that it has plans to automate as much of its workforce as possible.
“We’ve named it Wiscon Valley”, Walker told reporters at the White House.
Hansen expressed concerns that Foxconn would replace jobs at the plant with robots, as it has done at other facilities. It employs a million workers, as I said, in Asia.
The announcement of big investment in the United States by Hon Hai will mount a pressure on Korean companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. Apple declined to comment on Trump’s remarks, on where or when the plants were planned for, or on whether the Foxconn announcement was related to Apple. The rest of us are going to cheer and figure out how we get this thing going forward.
“Obviously, there is a strong desire for the state to land a company as big as Foxconn”, said Jared Walczak, a senior policy analyst at the conservative Tax Foundation in Washington.
In addition, China’s manufacturing workforce is significantly more flexible than the USA, with many workers in China sleeping at the factories for convenience.
A spokesman for the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX), a nonpartisan research organization focusing on tax and fiscal policy, said there are too many unanswered questions about the Foxconn deal to pass judgment about its value to the state.
