Govt ready to discuss JNU or Jat quota row in Parliament: Naidu
Some of them said that with Parliament not functioning properly, other organs of the Constitution are tending to enter the domain of the Legislature and this needs to be addressed.
“The Congress will play its role of a constructive opposition, but the responsibility of running the parliament depends on the government”.
The meeting called by Ansari on Saturday is likely to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A consensus has emerged among political parties that Parliament should run smoothly and the Question Hour should not become a victim of disruptions, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said on Monday.
The Budget Session kick starts on February 23.
Ansari had also held an informal meeting with leaders of Congress and BJP in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as well.
The government was also keen on discussion on issues that generated heat in the last few weeks, such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) controversy.
The Opposition has demanded a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on the situation in universities across the country, including JNU, and the government has agreed to it. While the government and members of the ruling party are willing to aggressively debate the issue, this tussle could have been avoided.
Will the opposition allow Parliament to function in the upcoming budget session?
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Samajwadi party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay are present in the meeting. The government requires the opposition’s support in the Rajya Sabha to pass key legislations.
The JNU has been on the boil after a police crackdown on students accused of shouting anti-India slogans. The government has made no mistake anywhere… “The Patiala House incidents have changed the narrative”, remarked a senior Congress leader.
Each side is convinced that it will win the final argument.
