GP to test one million people in three months
Despite that, in 2014, there were still 36.9 million people living with HIV globally, 2.6 million of them children under the age of 15, with only a third of them receiving treatment.
Ramaphosa said that, as a result of the massive treatment program, infected South Africans were living much longer with very few people dying of AIDS- or tuberculosis- (TB) related illnesses.
In statement to mark this year’s World AIDS Day which fell yesterday, WHO director general Dr Margaret Chan said the Millennium Development Goal on reversing the HIV epidemic was reached ahead of the 2015 deadline.
“New York was the first state to give a date, a target date, 2020 as the date to end the AIDS epidemic, end it once and for all”, he said.
“The important thing is to really get people to know their status and if the test were to come back positive really linking them into medical services”, Nellie Maldonado, supervisor at Tapestry Health in Springfield, told 22News. For that reason, on World Aids Day, health officials emphasize the importance of testing.
In honor of World AIDS Day, hundreds of New Yorkers gathered to remember those who died and look forward to a cure.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, speaking separately at the same event Tuesday at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, said his administration will seek financial and programmatic commitments of $200 million toward housing, life insurance and other programs.
Rochester also has the second highest rate of HIV infection in the state, just behind New York City.
