Grealish will have to wait for England call
The 20-year-old announced on Monday that he intends to represent England at worldwide level rather than Ireland, despite having played for the Irish at Under-21 level.
JACK GREALISH WILL not be considered for selection for England’s forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania as he waits for worldwide clearance to be granted.
“If he had played for Ireland and Ireland had qualified, I think he would have made the Euros [next summer] because he would have been an important cog in the wheel of Martin O’Neill’s machine”.
Paul McGrath admits he is disappointed with Jack Grealish’s decision to choose England over Ireland.
With England already assured of progressing as group winners, a series of friendly games, starting against Spain and France in November, have been arranged to enable Hodgson experiment with personnel.
“I think Jack’s a very young man, it was a huge decision”.
“His chances of getting a regular spot with the England team would be a little more limited and we could do with him at the moment as well”.
“Talented player though he is, at the age he is, he still has a lot to prove”.
“England is going to be a lot more competitive because of the pool of players he has to pick from”.
“He would have got more regular worldwide football with Ireland and it would have been great if he had picked us”.
“He has the right to choose whoever he wants to play for but it’s disappointing”.
“I don’t think it could be money because they [players] get paid well enough”.
Speaking to the Official Site to give his thoughts, Sherwood’s main focus was on at least it’s out of the way now and the media hype and faux indignation from folks can stop, and Jack can just focus himself on what’s important – performing for us and now seeing if those performances warrant the worldwide call.
“It’s good news for England”, Sherwood said.
“You can only wish him well”.
