Great Britain’s Jason Kenny wins men’s keirin, his third gold in Rio
British cycling’s power couple Jason Kenny & Laura Trott dominated on Tuesday as they helped Team GB take their medals tally to 50 in Rio.
Not only did cyclist Laura Trott totally knock our socks off by becoming the only United Kingdom woman to have bagged FOUR olympic golds, but her fiancee Jason Kenny also joined bike-legend Sir Chris Hoy in having six Olympic golds too.
Trott’s second gold of the games brought her overall Olympic golds total to four – making her the most successful British female Olympian of all time.
Kenny, who had already won the men’s sprint and team sprint to add to his two golds from London in 2012 and a gold and silver in Beijing in 2008, overtook the pace bike just before it left the track.
It was safe to say that Kenny’s sixth golden triumph at an Olympic games was well worth the wait, even if the drama did create suspense that every British fan would have liked to have dealt without. I guess I’m exhausted.
As the riders spun into the final lap Kenny, the world’s fastest sprinter, found another level and burst clear of the rest of the pack just before the line.
Matthijs Buchli of Holland took silver and Awang bronze.
Vocativ analyzed millions of tweets about the Olympics and found that Twitter users thought Kenny’s performance was the most incredible of Tuesday’s events.
Vogel became the second woman representing Germany to win an individual gold medal in cycling track.
“I think it was the right decision to put everyone back in, obviously I was happy to be put back in”, Kenny said.
But, in London 2012 – Kenny returning for his second Olympics, Trott arriving at her first -they were candidly pictured kissing behind David Beckham, at the beach volleyball on Horse Guards Parade, during the Games, according to another report in a Britain paper.
“Following his win, Jason admitted: “‘The best thing about is that we get to come away together and race together.
“I am so proud at what I achieved”, she told reporters.
Britain won two more medals in Tuesday’s women’s sprint event, with Becky James beaten by Germany’s Kristina Vogel in the final and Katy Marchant winning the bronze race against Elis Ligtlee of the Netherlands.
