Great British Bake Off 2015: victor Nadiya Hussain set to make £1million
Nadiya Hussain, Luton-born with Bangladeshi origins has risen to the occasion to be crowned as the victor of this year’s Great British Bake Off.
But she said after scooping the trophy: “I really hope that I have not become known more for my facial expressions or my eyebrows than my baking”.
She’s had to keep news of her victory quiet for months – but Great British Bake Off champion Nadiya Hussain has finally broken her silence about her win, calling it “one of the best moments of my life”.
Her final showstopper of a with lemon drizzle cakes proved the decider in red, white and blue proved the decider.
Everyone from London’s bookies to Prime Minister David Cameron (who rushed home from a Conservative party conference in Manchester to watch) loudly favored Hussain ahead of the final competition in which the impressively calm baker sailed through, wowing the judges with her iced buns, mille feuille and gorgeously decorated lemon drizzle wedding cake.
“My family are constantly telling me that they are very proud of me, and that really helps me through”, she told the Radio Times. He even made her wedding cake!
“Nadiya said: “I went into the tent as the smallest baker at 4ft 11″ but I walked out feeling a giant – nearly as tall as my fellow baker, six footer Mat Riley”.
After 10 weeks of challenges, the bakers have reached the final – where a bad bake begins to seem like a life-or-death situation. Ian forgot the sugar on one of his bakes (!) but also produced “heaven on a plate”, Tamal struggled with timing but Nadiya “ticked the boxes”, according to Paul.
Nadiya impressed in the signature bake with her iced buns, half of them cardamom and almond, and half nutmeg and sour cherry. I’m never going to say “I can’t do it”. It’s like acrobatics, I had no idea my face did that.
Ms Wheatcroft, who also owns The Bakehouse, a bakery in Carlisle, says that interest in artisan baking is still on the rise with bread sales doubling in the a year ago.
30 year old Nadiya has been baking for ten years after wondering why her father only served ice cream for dessert at his restaurant.
On her many highs and lows, she described the show as an “emotional experience”.
Nadiya emerged as the victor despite coming last in the technical challenge in the very first episode.
During the course of her Bake Off journey, Nadiya has come up against a few other hurdles too. She revealed that her son had to watch her appearances from hospital after being taken ill midway through the series.
For the showstopper, Tamal chose to construct a sticky toffee pudding cake, with a design inspired by a deserted Chinese fishing village that had been reclaimed by nature.
