Green Bay Packers prevail over San Diego Chargers 27-20
With Rodgers’ stuck in a rut, San Diego’s Philip Rivers supplied the passing heroics. They fell to 2-4 while insult was added to injury. After the game Rivers was philosophical about the loss, saying that if they keep trying like they did Sunday and last week, it will click for the Chargers and they will start winning again.
The Packers are off next week, then play at Denver on November 1. “Damarious is off to a great start”.
The Packers started strongly.
Green Bay Packers are well known for their offensive fireworks during home games, but look for the team to attack a run defense allowing 132.4 yards per contest and try to steadily wear San Diego Chargers’ defense down.
But the stout pass rush finally caught up to Rivers in the second half. Datone Jones sacked Rivers on third-and-7 from the Packers 40 to end one drive.
With less than a minute left in the game, Antonio Gates hauled in a 12-yard catch to bring the offense to a first-and-goal on the three-yard line, with the Chargers trailing 27-20.
It was the most porous outing of the season for the Packers’ defense.
Rivers threw for a career-high 503 yards in the loss, including 77 on the final drive. Unfortunately for the Chargers, the Packers led in the one category that mattered most: points. Johnson finished with six receptions for 166 yards. This time it was one of the longer touchdown scores of the season for the Packers, as Starks ended up with both of the first two touchdowns of the game.
The Patriots improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2007. He first went to his left, but was blocked, so he bounced to the right and went down the sideline to score.
For a half, the teams traded jabs.
New England lost starting left tackle Nate Solder earlier this week when he was put on injured reserve.
Starks finished with 10 carries for 112 yards, his first 100-yard rushing day since Week 2 of 2013. That sense of perfection snapped last week when Rodgers threw two interceptions and coughed up a fumble.
Danny Woodhead had another good day – as a pass receiver.
They’ll head into the bye at 6-0, but not without plenty of questions.
James Starks had never scored two touchdowns in an National Football League game before. Yet, from the 2-yard line with 23 seconds remaining, they had an opportunity to force overtime.
Newton led the Panthers (5-0) to touchdowns on their final two possessions after trailing 23-14, the second straight week the Seahawks collapsed in the fourth quarter. Kickoff is slated for 1:05 p.m.
On a free play with an offsides call, Rodgers found Janis deep down the left side for a 45 yard gain.
“You look at the style of wins we’re having, hopefully that means something later on down the road”, linebacker Clay Matthews said.
