Green’s arm, Judge’s bat lead Yankees over Blue Jays 1-0
Chad Green has been recalled from Class AAA to start against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight at Yankee Stadium (7 p.m., YES).
The Yankees won for the fifth time in six games, taking the first 1-0 decision between the teams since 2005.
Dellin Betances escaped trouble in the ninth when Edwin Encarnacion hit into a hard 5-4-3 double play with runners on the corners to end the game.
Chad Green struck out 11 in six dominant innings.
Green gave up only two hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out 11 batters, becoming only the second rookie in franchise history to record 11 or more Ks in a game while allowing no runs or walks.
Green and the bullpen made sure that didn’t matter, as Tyler Clippard tossed a ideal seventh, Adam Warren a scoreless eighth and Betances finished it for his fifth save. The 6-7, 230-pound rightfielder, swinging first pitch, took a flat knuckleball into the gap in right-center for an RBI double that made it 1-0.
So give R.A. Dickey, Joe Biagini, Brett Cecil and Ryan Tepera credit for keeping things close in a 1-0 loss to the New York Yankees, who went an astonishing 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
The wins have come as the Yankees have shed veterans Alex Rodriguez, Carlos Beltran, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman.
“I felt like I pitched pretty well”.
“It’s definitely different”, manager Joe Girardi said. He has allowed just one home run over his last four outings. Betances held on for his fifth save as the Yankees stopped a five-game losing streak to Toronto. Painting with a mid-90s heater and a disappearing slider that Blue Jays continually waved over, he retired the first 13 batters and was in danger only once. After Troy Tulowitzki singled and Darrell Ceciliani doubled with one out in the fifth, the 25-year-old rookie fanned his final hitters.
“I just try to go up there and do a job; be a consistent part of this lineup and just make contact”, Judge said before the game. Judge now has two homers, a double and two singles in his first 10 major league at-bats. He became the first Yankees player with an extra-base hit and RBI in his first three career games since the RBI became an official stat in 1920, ESPN Stats & Info said.
The rookie didn’t buckle under the pressure, striking out Justin Smoak with a slider before freezing Melvin Upton Jr. with a 94 miles per hour two-seamer, stranding the runners.
Blue Jays: OF Ezequiel Carrera (Achilles) could come off the 15-DL Tuesday night.
Wendelstedt was struck by a tip from Brian McCann of the Yankees leading off the bottom of the second inning Monday night. Wendelstedt stayed in for the rest of the inning, then left for the night.
Toronto had a.500 record when it began its three-game sweep of NY.
The Blue Jays outscored the Yankees 10-1 during its three-game sweep last August 7-9 at Yankee Stadium, won nine of the final 13 meetings and the American League East by six games. Estrada was outstanding August 3 in Houston when he allowed one run and four hits in seven innings.
