Greene Named New Jersey Devils’ Captain
The owner of the New Jersey Devils has no intention of sacrificing the future of the team to make changes that might pick up a couple of extra wins this season.
Much like their season opening win the Winnipeg Jets started slow before breaking away to their second win of the season. There were likewise times he felt the Jets outworked them. The 32-year-old Greene is entering his ninth season with the Devils, and is coming off a season in which he played all 82 games and notched 22 points, with three goals and 19 assists. The Jets will stay in the New York area this weekend as they have games Monday and Tuesday against the Islanders and Rangers. Wheeler’s goal at the at the 3:56 mark of the second ended up being the game-winning goal.
Goaltender Michael Hutchinson made 20 saves while left wing Andrew Ladd also scored for the Jets.
“I’m simply cheerful they are going in”, he said. It’s just a learning experience thing for us, that all it takes is five minutes and a game gets away from you a little bit. “We made a nice showing not letting escaping”. He can play the way that we want to play and he’s a leader on the ice. New Jersey, which hasn’t qualified for the postseason since losing to Los Angeles in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final, has a new general manager in Ray Shero and coach in John Hynes as it kicks off its first campaign without Lou Lamiorello running the ship since 1986-87.
Harris said the Devils are “fifth in the National Hockey League in tickets sold”, although he would not disclose the exact amount.
As far as season-ticket sales lost from last season, Devils CEO Scott O’Neil said, “We renewed at about 90 percent for the second year in a row and last year we were seventh in renewals”.
Harris also spoke about the on-ice product and was empathic about his vision for its future success.
Patrik Elias, Mike Cammalleri, Adam Henrique, and Travis Zajac were named alternate captains.
As expected, defenseman Eric Gelinas and forwards Stefan Matteau and Brian O’Neill were the Devils’ healthy scratches.
The Devils outshot the Jets 10-7 in the third period, but the Jets controlled the puck enough, so the Devils never got the necessary sustained pressure to get one in.
“It hit Hutch’s stick and I thought a D was returning to us so I simply attempted to whack it”, Trouba said.
“So, you have a progression of things getting better”.
