Greenville prison authorities lock inmates in prison cells
Inmates at Kinross Correctional Facility in the Upper Peninsula turned violent Saturday and trashed their housing units, starting a small fire, smashing sinks, and breaking at least one window, an official confirmed.
In June, three officers were sent to hospital after an inmate stabbed two of them; the third was injured trying to restrain the inmate.
Anita Lloyd, the Communications Director for the MCO said corrections officers have revealed to them that inmates lit fire to a housing unit, and barricaded themselves in housing units.
Friday’s assault happened in that unit while the inmate was out of his cell to shower and use the phone, she said.
Elsewhere in the United States, activist groups took to social media and called for peaceful protests to improve the lives and working conditions of prisoners. Allen says should lead to more staff and alleviate the shortage. Ten correctional officers and 33 inmates ultimately died.
Perry Correctional Institution is a high security prison in Pelzer.
The strike was planned to align with the 45th anniversary of the Attica prison rebellion at Attica Correctional Facility in NY.
Phillip A. Ruiz, an organizer for the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, told The Herald that the national protests would be nonviolent.
“We’re working on that, but we’re not there yet”, he said. “It was every dorm, as if it was planned”, the Holmes officer said. The department is assessing damages and has transported prisoners involved elsewhere. “Additional information will be made available following a comprehensive after-action review and investigation”, FDC’s statement concluded.
