According to reports on Friday, Schiano will be making his way back into college football, as he will be the one taking the headset from Ash and coordinating the Buckeyes’ defense.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano is expected to become the defensive coordinator at Ohio State, a source told ESPN Insider Adam Schefter.
In a bit of a surprise, Ohio State’s found their new defensive coordinator in an unlikely place.
Schiano was on South Carolina’s interview list for its head coaching position, which eventually went to Will Muschamp.
He may have failed as a National Football League head coach, but he can coach defense and that’s what he’ll be asked to do at Ohio State with the hopes of rehabbing his image and giving him a shot at another head coaching job in the coming years.
Schiano and Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer have always been friends. In all, Schiano compiled a 68-67 record at Rutgers, but was 56-33 in his final seven seasons. Schiano was an occasional visitor to Ohio State practices the last couple of years. Schiano has been out of the coaching ranks for the past two seasons.
He was 11-21 in his two seasons in Tampa Bay, where the Buccaneers allowed the second-fewest rushing yards per game (96.3) in both seasons.
