Grey Cup: Ottawa vs Edmonton recapped using tweets
Jordan Lynch scored on a quarterback sneak with just over three minutes left, providing the winning points as the Edmonton Eskimos won the Grey Cup 26-20 over Ottawa in Winnipeg.
That meant the Eskimos got their first Grey Cup victory since 2005, and meant the Redblacks’ storybook season didn’t have the happiest of endings.
It is Edmonton’s 14th Grey Cup crown, the second most in CFL history behind the Toronto Argonauts’ 16 championships.
The Redblacks advanced to the big game in just their second year in the league.
The game didn’t start well for Edmonton.
“It’s about time. We’ve had some tough years”, he said, a huge grin accompanying his Eskimos poncho.
“I wanted to get it for my family, the guys in this locker-room, and for the city of Ottawa. So that’s how it transpired”.
The Redblacks scored two quick touchdowns on their opening two drives to start the game and held a 13-10 lead following the first quarter. Reilly’s three-yard pass to Akeem Shavers for the two-point convert erased a 20-18 advantage.
Campbell’s father, Hugh, coached in six consecutive Grey Cup games with the Eskimos, winning five consecutive titles from 1978-82. Said Jones “This game ain’t no different from any other game we play”.
The modern Grey Cup halftime show began in Winnipeg in 1991 when Luba – still very hot with songs like Let It Go – was brought in. But then the work gets that much harder.
They came with cowbells, painted faces and layers of long underwear under their parkas to watch the Canadian football showdown of the year. “And it’s on us to make sure that happens”.
The RedBlacks jumped out to a 13-0 lead midway through the first quarter before Edmonton even had their first possession.
The trio say they have been a bit put off by the “pro-Ottawa” sentiment in Winnipeg but that’s not enough to dampen their spirits. But at the end of the days it’s just the next game. “Second half? (Four) points (allowed)?”
Allowing teams to use their own balls on offence gives quarterbacks a chance to play with balls that are familiar to them, as long as they meet standards.
Henry Burris was 22/29 for 220 yards and passed for 2 touchdowns, but also had an interception.
In the 2nd quarter, Chris Milo made a field goal and Sean Whyte missed a 45-yard attempt, but got a single point.
John Cliford has never been to the Grey Cup Festival before, but came prepared as he strutted around in a bright yellow and black zoot suit in the colours of his hometown Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Dressed in team colours with a bright, fuzzy red-haired toque, Maisonneuve said they have loved every minute of the party so far.
