Grizzly Adams star Dan Haggerty dies
Adams starred as a self-reliant mountain man in the cult classic movie, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams and portrayed the same enigmatic character in a television show by the same name.
Haggerty passed away at his San Fernando Valley home after losing his battle to cancer.
The report said that the actor was diagnosed with with cancer a few months ago after he underwent surgery for back pain.
The actor’s manager, Terry Bomar, confirmed the news to Variety.
He added he spoke to the star yesterday on the phone and Haggerty told him he loved him. Much like Adams, Haggerty also spent much of his life around wild animals and helped raise a performing black bear for his family’s wildlife attraction in Wisconsin.
Haggerty’s career spanned an impressive five decades, including smaller roles on TV shows like Charlie’s Angels and The Love Boat in the 1980s.
Following his success in the Grizzly Adams series, Haggerty found work in more obscure projects. “Grizzly Adams may’ve been the ultimate hipster”.
Haggerty was the star of 1977 show The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams.
The real-life Adams, a cobbler born in MA in 1812, who moved from Boston to the Sierra-Nevada Mountains after several business ventures failed.
The role was flawless for Haggerty as he worked as an animal trainer before he became an actor.
His wife, Samantha, died after in a motorcycle accident in 2008.
Haggerty played a mountain man who rescues and cares for a grizzly bear named Ben.
Aside from Megan, Haggerty’s survivors include his other children, Dylan, Cody, Tracey and Don.
