Grooveshark Co-Founder Found Dead at 28
According to the paper, which spoke to Greenberg’s mother, Lori, her son “had no health problems”, and that at this time, drugs are not considered a factor. “He was excited about potential new things that he was going to start”, she said, adding that authorities are “as baffled as I am”.
Grooveshark co-founder Josh Greenberg, a pioneer in Gainesville’s student startup movement, was found dead in his bed Sunday by his girlfriend in the house they shared.
The Gainesville Police Department also confirmed Greenberg’s death and explicitly noted the lack of evidence of suicide.
An autopsy is being performed today, and will pretty quickly reveal if there was anything wrong with Greenberg’s heart or brain, but toxicology results won’t be in for another couple of months.
Reported by Lori Greenberg, Josh was relieved rather than depressed about the settlement, per the Gainesville Sunday. On April 30th of this year, after losing a massive lawsuit against Universal Music Group and other major labels, Grooveshark was permanently shut down, with assets seized.
Greenberg founded Grooveshark as a freshman at the University of Florida. At its peak, the company had up to 40 million users a month and 145 employees, occupying most of the second floor of the Union Street Station in downtown Gainesville and a small office in New York City.
He is survived by his mother, grandparents, and a younger brother. A memorial service is being planned.
