Gruesome killing of New Mexico girl stuns friends, neighbors

Victoria’s mother, Michelle Martens, 35, allegedly stood by as her boyfriend, Fabian Gonzales, 31, and his cousin Jessica Kelley, 31, injected the child with methamphetamine “to calm her down” so they could both sexually assault her, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Albuquerque Journal.

New Mexico corrections and court officials say a man arrested in the killing of a 10-year-old Albuquerque girl was supposed to be on supervised probation from an unrelated case but wasn’t being monitored by probation officers. She said Kelley held her hand over Victoria’s mouth and stabbed her in the stomach after Gonzales choked the child.
Investigators discovered her remains partially wrapped in a blanket and set ablaze in an Albuquerque apartment bathroom early Wednesday.
After she returned to her Albuquerque, New Mexico, home from school Wednesday, she was going to indulge in cake, manicures and pedicures with her godmother – the flawless day for a little girl.
While police have not released the name of the young girl, Albuquerque Public Schools confirmed the 10-year-old was a student at Petroglyph Elementary.
Kathy Jaramillo knew Martens and Victoria. But officials acknowledged Friday that the man accused of injecting her with methamphetamine before raping her was not being monitored by probation officers or tested for drugs as mandated by a judge past year. According to KRQE, Gonzales took a plea deal after an August 2014 incident during which he was accused of assaulting his former girlfriend as she was driving a vehicle he was riding in, with the couple’s child in the backseat.
The killing happened on the day Victoria was going to celebrate her 10th birthday.
“We were not aware of this plea agreement until this morning it came to our attention, we never received the documentation to say that he had entered into this agreement”, New Mexico Department of Corrections Deputy Secretary of Administration Alex Sanchez told KRQE. The agency has joined police in the investigation into the death.
Victoria’s grandparents and other close friends said in a statement Friday that children are the most handsome, most treasured of creations and that they need to be put first by parents, communities and governments. As ABC 7 reports, New Mexico 10-year-old Victoria Martens’ mother and the mother’s boyfriend have now also been arrested in connection with the girl’s death, the incomprehensible events that allegedly lead up to it, and the desecration of the murdered 10-year-old girl’s corpse. Gonzales and Kelley are also charged of criminal sexual penetration of a minor. “I would find it hard to believe that she was planning a birthday party for this child”, Tixier said. It was meant to ensure he committed no crimes and threatened jail time as punishment for violations like illegal drug use.
Second Judicial District Court spokesman Tim Korte says records show the judgment and probation order were forwarded to the corrections department in February 2015. In his statement in the criminal complaint, Gonzales said his cousin hit him and Martens with an iron. That’s when she moved in with her cousin and his girlfriend, and tragically, Victoria.
Bobbs said she’ll help her grandkids through this tragedy by reminding them of the good times. “Today, I speak for the children and the voice of Victoria. So many are in need of the support and prayers of our community”. But officials acknowledged Friday that the man who injected her with methamphetamine before raping her was not being monitored by probation officers or tested for drugs as mandated by a judge previous year.
Those stories made national headlines, but Victoria’s slaying is drawing deeper condemnation.
Details of what New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and law enforcement officials described as an unspeakable crime emerged in a criminal complaint made public Thursday.
“I personally took on some of the most brutal, violent, gut-wrenching cases our state has ever seen”. She said Friday nothing compares to the killing of Victoria Martens.
