GSP To Fight Bisping for Middleweight Belt
While several opponents were touted for St-Pierre’s comeback fight, White said it was clear he wanted to face Bisping.
St-Pierre’s typically subdued approach to fight promotion was the one issue the UFC was going to have leading up to his first fight back.
“If they offer me the No. 1 contender, I’ll take the No. 1 contender”, Bisping said on a recent edition of UFC Unfiltered.
“Bisping is coming off minor knee surgery and three of his last four fights have been wars”. But, put the question right back to you: If you are Yoel Romero, or Luke Rockhold, or Jacare [Souza] or any of these guys. Bisping will talk to anyone, anywhere about the fight and hype himself up in the process.
“I deserve this payday”. I’ve beat Anderson Silva.
But after almost four years off, White admitted he didn’t even think St-Pierre would be back in the Octagon at all.
The last time Georges St-Pierre fought in the Octagon was over three years ago.
Britain’s first UFC champion Bisping will put his middleweight title on the line against former welterweight ruler St-Pierre, although no date or location has been set. Regardless, Romero feels that he will get his shot one day, and UFC president Dana White confirmed that Romero is next when announcing the bout. It’s a big fight. Of course, I’d take GSP.
But even despite those wins, oddsmakers have St-Pierre as the favorite to win the pivotal pay-per-view main event. He is the longest reigning welterweight champ in UFC history, defending his title nine times.
Oh, and because you literally can’t have a UFC anymore these days without somehow shoehorning Conor McGregor into it, TMZ apparently also asked White about the possibility of a matchup between the two legendary fighters.
We are living in the “Moneyweight Era” where it’s all about making dollars, even if the fights don’t make sense. If not, Las Vegas and then possibly in Bisping’s backyard of England. I want it for my children’s sake, for my family, for when I’m retired so we can still live a good life. St-Pierre has a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Under Armour but all UFC competitors have been required to wear Reebok fight gear since UFC 189 in July 2015.
“I’ve got nothing but respect for Georges”.
