Guillermo del Toro on Kojima: ‘I’ll do whatever the f*** he wants’
Last year, Metal Gear Solid-creator Hideo Kojima broke up with publisher Konami, leading to the unfortunate cancellation of Silent Hills, the horror game he was making with Guillermo del Toro. Since people have mentioned that his games take a while to come out, Kojima said he’s “trying to change that”.
Though del Toro hasn’t been able to take much of an active role in game development, he said he’s taken plenty of inspiration from a lifetime of hardcore gaming. You’ll probably recall that Kojima recently signed a deal with Sony that will see his company – Kojima Productions – create a new, exclusive title for the PlayStation 4.
It looks the dream team behind the cancelled Silent Hills could be getting back together, as Kojima gives hints on his “edgy” new game. Many wondered if he may go the simple game route for his new IP, but it sounds like Kojima is thinking much bigger. (Del Toro comes off as super fed up with the movie industry.) It’s interesting stuff to say the least.
To anyone looking for a comparison to what Street Fighter V feels like right now, just imagine if Konami released Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, and then patched in all of Phantom Pain a few months later. The developer also spoke about other projects he would like to work on. Del Toro was born in 1963 and Kojima in 1964. Del Toro invited Kojima over where they played with the filmmakers geeky games and toys.
Kojima also talked about how del Toro supported him while he started his new startup.
They are not controlling what I’m doing at all; that was part of the conditions, and Sony was very respectful towards me and what I do.
“Of course, I’d love to. I’m 52, I’m only interested in things that motivate me, just having fun, and with Kojima I always have fun”. That’s what people want from me and that’s what I want to do. “I sing them in Spanish, he sings them in Japanese, we don’t understand shit”, del Toro said.
Kojima and del Toro will be joined by journalist and host Geoff Keighley to “revisit some of their fondest memories from their own individual careers as well as some of the pivotal moments from each other’s work that remain a constant source of inspiration”, according to the official DICE Summit website.
