We first heard about a movie based on Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark horror book series back in 2013, with Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan working on the project.
Scary Stories’ tales were arguably eclipsed by illustrator Stephen Gammell’s ghastly illustrations which, in an injustice to young Wednesday Addams types everywhere, were replaced with new art in 2012.
If you’ve read the books, sound off in the comments section about how you think del Toro should approach the material.
He will produce the film alongside Sean Daniel, Jason Brown and Elizabeth Grave, and may potentially direct the film, which has been adapted for the screen by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory scribe John August. The books sold more than 7 million copies worldwide.
Guillermo del Toro joins SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK. The film will follow a group of outcast kids that face their fears to save their town after nightmares invade their lives. But it’s very possible the concept has been reworked since then, especially since Goosebumps came out with a very similar premise past year. I’m curious to see how this turns out, though I’m already nervous of being scared. Gammell’s illustrations were particularly haunting. Del Toro seems like just the man for the job.
But here comes the most exciting news yet.
