Gun buyer in massacre mused on Facebook of troubles he faced

Marquez, 24 was charged Thursday with conspiring with Farook to provide material support to terrorism, making a false statement in connection with the acquisition of firearms, and immigration fraud, according to a statement from the Department of Justice.

“He has provided them a lot of details about the weapons, about possibly other attacks planned, about conversations particularly with Farook”, said Former FBI specialist Brad Garrett. Around that time Farook introduced him to radical Islamic ideology, the complaint said.

Authorities identified the shooters as American-born Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 29, of Pakistan.

Marquez’s family had no idea he was legally married until after the December 2 massacre of 14 people. Marquez’s 911 call the day after the attack is also detailed in the affidavit.

Marquez: [unintelligible] They can trace all the guns back to me. How did he get your gun? “And, you know, it raises questions about our values”.

“Since taking this office, I’ve never been more optimistic about a year ahead than I am right now”, he said before leaving Washington.

He was allegedly praised on Twitter by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the Boston Marathon bombers who, along with his brother, killed three people at the race in 2013 and injured more than 260 others.

It is alleged to have begun when Mr Marquez moved next door to Farook in 2005 and fell under his sway.

But if Farook, who only later was to meet his wife, bringing her to the United States on a special fiancée visa previous year, was highly focused, Mr Marquez could blabber.

Farook planned to toss a pipe bomb to stop traffic, then walk along the freeway firing at motorists, Marquez told investigators. Marquez would then shoot from a nearby hillside, targeting responding police officers. He was chosen, investigators say, because his Caucasian appearance would draw less attention.

Obama wants to make progress on two issues on which he has been long thwarted by Congress: toughening up gun regulations and closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In January 2012, Farook is hired by San Bernardino County as a trainee environmental health specialist and is promoted two years later. The affidavit says Marquez told agents he had tried to distance himself from Farook. “I don’t know how it’s gonna help the families who lost loved ones, but it might give them some type of hope”.

“Marquez admitted that the attacks were created to maximize the number of casualties that could be inflicted”, reads the complaint.

Marquez said he and Farook aborted their plans after authorities interrupted a terror plot in the area in November 2012 that involved four men who wanted to join either the Taliban or al-Qaida fighting US forces overseas.

Both attacks, coming days apart and just before the start of the holiday season, heightened public fears about future attacks on USA soil.

The Obamas’ visit comes as numerous families are still planning and attending funerals, and starting to grapple with what happened.
