Gun, not race, sparked Philando Castile killing, officer’s lawyer says
And I hunt and I fish and I own a gun. So, via the Atlanta Journal Constitution, here are 10 minutes of people hugging cops, telling them how sorry they are about their colleagues who died, and telling them how much they mean to the city. About 10% of those black Americans were unarmed, while about 61% had guns, the paper said. “The bad gangbanger”, Blanchard said.
An Army veteran fatally shot five police officers and wounded seven other officers during Thursday night’s downtown protest over the deaths of Sterling and Castile. The Dallas Police Department put out a photo on its Twitter account late Thursday of a man wearing a camouflage shirt and holding a rifle with the message: “This is one of our suspects. Gun!” and an officer is seen drawing his weapon and aiming at Sterling’s chest. Alton Sterling was shot by police Tuesday morning, and the next day, some of the last moments of Philando Castile’s life were shown on Facebook Live after he, too, was shot by police. “It had to do with the presence of a gun”, Kelly said in a statement, also indicating that the officer has had no disciplinary action taken against him over his career. She stated the officer shot Castile several times while he was attempting to grab his ID out of his back pocket.
Reynolds began livestreaming on Facebook from the vehicle shortly after Castile, who was bloodied, moaning and slumped in the driver’s seat, had been shot. That, too, was captured on a cellphone video.
The shooting of Philando Castile – one of two black men killed by police officers in America over two days – had “nothing to do with race”. “I will”, and Yanez could then be heard yelling, “I told him not to reach for it. I told him to get his hand off it”. She was also talking to the officer and told him, “You shot four bullets into him, Sir. He was just getting his license and registration, Sir”.
Dennis Flaherty, executive director of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, called Gov. Mark Dayton’s comments an “extraordinarily presumptive conclusion” that could lead to more violence. “In the meantime, it is important for the NRA not to comment while the investigation is ongoing”.
As an outside observer, Schommer’s paid attention as some criticize Black Lives Matter an anti-police movement.
“Would this have happened if those passengers would have been white?”
Thomas Kelly, who represents Yanez through the police union, told the NewsHour in a phone interview that such investigations can take as long as 18 months, but said “I’m not concerned about criminal proceedings here and I don’t think he is either”. As midnight passed and the crowd waned, the scene grew more tense at times, with face-offs between the remaining protesters and officers in riot gear. She insisted that the police had stopped them for a busted tail light that wasn’t even broken.
The records show no convictions for more serious crimes. It was not immediately known whether the gun held by Castile was legal.
Police said that day they had arrested three people over the shootings.
Reacting to the killing of two black men in the USA this week, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for the United States to comprehensively address discrimination, including racial disparities in law enforcement.
Police have an outsized fear of armed blacks, activists said.
As members of law enforcement, we understand there will always be questions when officers discharge their weapons and lives are lost.
Some will bring up that same exhausted argument that most of the time, it’s blacks killing other blacks, as if that gives police a permit for open season on people of color.
