Gun-rights activists protest Obama visit
President Obama on Friday traveled to Roseburg, Oregon, where he met with the families of the victims from last week’s mass shooting at Umpqua Community College.
“There are gonna be moments as we go forward where we’re gonna have to come together and figure out how do we stop things like this from happening”, Obama said in brief remarks after meeting with families.
“It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel”, Obama said October. 1. Phil Benedetti said it’s natural that the president would want to come. He then played a clip of the Democratic presidential candidate calling for more gun control.
She was one of nine victims killed when a gunman opened fire on the campus.
His visit comes hot on the heels of a slightly controversial visit in Roseburg, Oregon, where he received a rather tepid welcome from a few community members who disagree with the President’s views on gun control.
“I can’t think of a better way to send a message than what these fine patriots did by protesting against a lawless president who seeks to not only take away their right to protect themselves, but who also ignores the Constitution and tries to usurp power away from Congress and ultimately, the people”. He pledged to “politicize” the issue.
Just hours after the shooting last Thursday, Obama said gun violence “is something we should politicize”.
He spoke softly as he said the families wanted to communicate how much they appreciate the “help, thoughts and prayers” of the entire UCC community and the country.
“Oregon Governor Kate Brown joined the President for the auto ride from Roseburg Regional Airport to Roseburg High School”, said Brandi Hoffine, White House spokeswoman.
One of the most vocal anti-gun advocates is Britain’s own Piers Morgan, who campaigned vigorously for better firearm regulation while he was hosting a nightly news show in the US.
Demonstrator George Starr said: “By coming here, Obama is going to politicise a tragedy by saying that you have to have gun control“.
Early Friday, a shooting at another university left one person dead and three others wounded. “People in Roseburg, they don’t need that tragedy used against them and that’s what happening”.
Obama was already scheduled to go to the West Coast trip when the shooting occurred, and the White House adjusted his schedule to include Roseburg. Meantime, on Monday, the community college just behind me will resume classes for the first time since the shooting. “Guns are a part of American culture”, says Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defence League.
NEAL KARLINSKY (voice-over): In Oregon today, the President found himself in hostile territory during a visit he said was all about consoling victims.
