Gunman kills guard, self at New York federal
A man fatally shot a security officer and then took his own life at a federal office building in Lower Manhattan Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The security guard was rushed by ambulance to the nearby Lenox Health Greenwich Village facility in cardiac arrest, the city fire department said.
The suspect entered the building just after 5pm on Friday (local time) and immediately shot the guard with a handgun, police said.
Two men have been killed in a shooting attack at a New York federal building.
One witness told the New York Post she saw a deranged man running diagonally across Hudson and King streets. The reason for the shooting remained unclear.
No other suspects are now being sought, police said.
O’Neill says there is “no indication of a nexus to terrorism”.
The New York City Police Department and FBI will investigate the case, The New York Times reported.
Downing was a former federal employee at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, police Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller said. Police said it appears the gunman acted alone.
FJC Security said its search of company records found no connection between Camara and his killer.
Police have shut down streets in the area, bringing traffic to a standstill. Following the incident the building was placed on lockdown and briefly evacuated.
