Gunmen attack Shia mosque in Bangladesh, one killed
Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Shi’ite Muslim mosque in Bangladesh on Thursday, killing one person and wounding three as they prayed, the second attack on the country’s tiny Shia Muslim community in a month.
Police joint commissioner Monirul Islam said Al Bani was the main suspect behind last month’s rare bombing of a shrine that left two people dead and wounded dozens.
The 70-year-old imam of the mosque was killed and three other people injured when three gunmen opened fire on worshippers during prayers at the mosque last night.
The incident took place in the Bogra district, about 120 miles north of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, during evening prayers at the mosque.
The US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist activity, said on its website IS had claimed responsibility in a message posted on Twitter.
About the Indian fake currency, the authorities in Bangladesh has assured its pro-active support and the security sources said that fake currencies are printed in Pakistan and pumped into India through Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said after the attack in Bogra that those attacking mosques were not “true Muslims”.
The government rejects those claims and says local militants are involved in the killings.
Five terrorists from banned local Islamist outfit Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were also arrested during the raids carried out by police in Dhaka late Wednesday.
Tensions prevailed in Bangladesh over the trials of Islamists for so-called war crimes for their participation in struggle for the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.
