Guus Hiddink hints John Terry has Chelsea future
Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink insists John Terry may still be offered a new deal to stay at the club with the Blues open to discussing a new contract with the 35-year-old.
After the club opted to not renew his contract, Terry revealed on Sunday night that he would be leaving Stamford Bridge.
“I also had some conversations with [Terry] in the past days about all kinds of things in football”, he said. He is entitled, after his contract expires at the end of the season, to make up his mind, that is true.
“It was a bit surprising [to hear Terry speak out], but he’s completely entitled to do so”. On the circumstances behind how the club arrived at their decision, Terry added: “My agent made the call like we do every January”.
We reckon when you’re offered 20 million quid for one season’s work, that’s when the consideration process ends.
“And if they have identified a coach for next season, who’s to say he hasn’t given indication that Terry wouldn’t be in his plans?”
The Blues won the Premier League and League Cup titles a year ago, but a stunningly-slow start to their 2015-16 campaign resulted in manager Jose Mourinho getting fired and major shake-ups to the starting lineup. I like John very much, the way he’s playing and that he’s committed to the team, and will continue to be like that. Despite his declining form, the development will come as a shock to the Chelsea supporters for whom Terry more than any other player was the symbolic spearhead of the club’s rise to power in the Roman Abramovich era.
“John’s statistics, not just that but also the view we have on him, I have on him, he’s very fit”, explained the manager. Regardless of the situation, he will be very professional and play with all his heart as well. He is fit and performing as he has been while I’ve been here. “So the door is not shut and dialogue is always possible”.
Terry can expect a rousing reception in Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Watford and Sunday’s home contest with Manchester United. “He’s one of the key players and has been one of the key players, and is still”.
