Guy Who Taunted ‘Dirty Arabs’ for Years Accused in Killing
His anger towards the Jabara family turned deadly on Friday when police say he shot and killed Khalid Jabara.
“This suspect had a history of bigotry against our family. This man was a known danger”, the family’s statement read.
On Sep. 12th of a year ago, Majors allegedly hit Haifa with a auto, leaving her with a broken shoulder and other injuries. But while awaiting trial, he was released on bond and allowed to move back in-without an ankle monitor, the Jabaras said-next to the woman he was accused of almost killing, who already had a restraining order against him.
In the heartbreaking post on Facebook, Victoria Jabara Williams said that her family, who are Christians, lived in fear of Majors.
Mr Jabara’s family said Majors should have been charged with a hate crime after the hit-and-run incident.
Majors, who court records showed was married to a man in 2014, told police that the family “were filthy Lebanese and they throw gay people off roof tops”, a police report stated.
As reported by the Washington Post, the police acknowledged that Majors had used racial slurs and had a “fixation” with his Lebanese neighbours. He was apparently hiding behind a tree near a library when officers located him.
Veronia Laizure, civil rights director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ (CAIR) Oklahoma chapter, said the shooting was likely motivated by anti-Arab bigotry and it is indicative of a larger problem of anti-Arab xenophobia in the US.
Majors’ attorney, Marvin Lizama, said “The death of Khalid Jabara is a tragedy, and that’s the last thing you want to hear”.
“We thought, ‘Yay, we got rid of him; they extradited him to California, ‘ but what really happened is that when he came out eight months or so later, he just had more revenge for us”, recalled Vicky Jabara.
Haifa Jabara was previously granted a protective order against Majors in 2013 after alleging that he had harassed her and that he “is very racist towards foreigners and blacks”.
But less than a year ago, police recorded Majors making racist comments about the family just before he ran over Khalid’s mother in his vehicle.
‘The police came and told him there was nothing to be done’. He was a kind spirit, loving brother, uncle and son.
When police located Majors inside an apartment complex near the scene of the hit-and-run, “he was extremely drunk and urinating, without the use of his hands, through his open trousers”, according to an incident report.
Majors was released from jail in May after posting bond.
As news of Jabara’s death spreads, Twitter and Facebook have become awash with tributes to the 37-year-old. “That was how it started”, said Rebecca Abou-Chedid, a friend of the family’s who is serving as their spokesperson. According to a report published in spring by the Georgetown University’s Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, the United States has suffered a surge in hate crimes targeting Muslim communities that dovetails with the hateful rhetoric of the 2016 election cycle.
For those reasons, in light of Khalid Jabara’s brutal murder, we should again take this opportunity to unite our diverse communities and stand together for all hate crime victims who are targeted due to their nationality, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or any other minority status. “A system that could not keep a family safe is not a system that is working”.
