Actor Sean Penn may or may not be subject to prosecution stemming from his secret meeting with convicted drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, legal experts tell PEOPLE. Mexican authorities said such contacts led them to Guzman’s hideout.
Penn has been largely silent since Rolling Stone published his 10,000-word account of meeting with Mexico’s most wanted man, but CBS “This Morning” co-host Charlie Rose said Tuesday that Penn had agreed to an interview with him. “I don’t want to throw any other actors under the bus, but I know a lot of very, very serious actors and filmmakers who’ve been having meetings like this forever”, actor Matt Damon said.

It took the Mexican authorities at least 90 minutes to find the passageway, a senior law enforcement source told CNN. Guzman and his security chief traveled several blocks through the 3-foot (meter) tall storm sewer before popping out in the middle of an intersection.
Guzman’s July 11 prison escape, his second in the past 14 years, was a major embarrassment for the administration of President Enrique Pena Nieto, which had been praised for its aggressive push against Mexico’s top drug traffickers.
Penn, in an article published by Rolling Stone magazine on Saturday, said Del Castillo had been in contact with Guzman and arranged the meeting.
The actor says he has “nothing to hide” after the Mexican government has confirmed they are investigating the celebrity for his interaction with the criminal.
