Gymnast Tweddle injured training for winters sports TV show
Beth Tweddle is set to undergo surgery on her back after she damaged her spine while training for “The Jump” over the weekend. Fellow Olympian Beth Tweddle was hospitalised after injuring her back and former champion sprinter Linford Christie has quit after injuring his hamstring.
“At 20:00 GMT last night Beth was taken down for surgery where they took a piece of bone from her hip and used it to fuse the two vertebrae that were fractured, along with pinning them together”.
Beth is the third member of this year’s celebrity contestants to pull out of the show.
The 30-year-old had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering a fall on Saturday (February 6).
The world class gymnast was able to complete the dreaded jump but couldn’t stop and injured herself when she collided with a barrier.
It has not been announced what condition she is in, with Channel 4 expected to soon give a statement.
Talking from her hospital bed in Austria, Beth said: “Thank you so much for your support and concern”.
The severity of her injuries is now unknown.
In her place comes Heather Mills who took part in the show last year, but feels she has some “unfinished business” after having to jump on someone else’s prosthetic foot after breaking her own last year.
“We use the very best experts to keep everyone as safe as possible, but there is always an element of risk”. All of the sudden I did a ski jump.
The mounting injuries have led to many viewers calling for the reality TV series to be cancelled with many people taking to social media to express their anger.
Former The Wanted singer Tom Parker has replaced Tina Hobley.
A Channel 4 spokeswoman confirmed that Tweddle had been taken to hospital with a back injury but declined to comment on reports she would need surgery.
