Gymnastics: Americans blow away opposition to win gold
The 4-foot 9 gymnast has dominated the sport since her debut in 2013 and is the first female gymnast since 1974 to win four consecutive all-around titles at the USA national championships. “We want to do the very best all the time”.
Ledecky, just 19, won her second gold.
For the Russians and Chinese, it was ultimately a battle for the silver medal as the US outshone the rest of the teams from the beginning.
There were some major moments in today’s events.
On uneven bars, the Americans were spectacular.
Bethesda, Maryland’s Katie Ledecky attempts to continue her reign in the 200-meter freestyle with an Olympic win, while defending Olympic 100-meter freestyle champion Nathan Adrian attempts quest to defend his title. We may never again see a team so daring, deep and determined.
Raisman, the reigning Olympic floor champion, followed with a more classic routine, delivered with a veteran’s command, her strongest tumbling pass coming last. Hernandez went first. The crowd loved her music; they loved her, as she pranced and danced about with the frivolity of a child showing off in the backyard, peppering the routine with impressive tumbling.
He starts on the floor exercise and comes to the event with a gold in hand from the men’s team finals Monday.
After their big win was official, the ladies finally announced their team name.
The golden girls dubbed themselves “The Final Five” in honor of Karolyi’s retirement at the end of the Olympics and the fact that the format is changing for Tokyo in 2020 so that only four team members will take part in the team competition.
Team U.S.A. easily outscored the other competitors in every event (with a final score of 184.897), so much so that the real suspense came from the struggle for second place. But as it turns out, the Americans’ score of 184.897 beat silver medalists Russian Federation by a whole 8.209 points – the largest margin of victory at major meet under current scoring, according to ESPN stats. For comparison, that’s only.685 ahead of bronze medal-winning China, and 4.601 than Brazil, who came in last out of the eight teams.
But despite those glitches, the “Final Five” soared so far out of sight of their rivals that the other teams must have felt they needed to board a supersonic jet to catch them.
