Half Would Feel Embarrassed by Trump Presidency
Trump wins 28 percent support in a Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday, with Cruz nipping at his heels with 24 percent. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was the only other candidate who did markedly better online than in live interviews, and the difference was only 2 percent.
That’s well said, and it’s not an unreasonable area of concern for Trump’s improbable candidacy. Fourteen percent said they would not vote for either one, and another 9 percent said they would not vote at all.
Trump launched a flurry of attacks on Bush, repeatedly insisting that Bush was a “low energy” candidate not suited to lead the country.
“Half of American voters say they’d be embarrassed to have Donald Trump as their commander-in-chief and most Americans think he doesn’t have a good chance in November, but there he is still at the top of the Republican heap”, said pollster Tim Malloy. Trump had the support of 29 percent of “very conservative” caucus-goers, 24 percent of evangelicals and 26 percent of tea party Republicans. Among Democrats 82 percent said they would be embarassed. His comments at the fundraiser, an audio copy of his remarks obtained by The New York Times, were the first time he said them in the context of Trump and neurosurgeon Ben Carson. The margin of error is 3.3 percentage points.
The polls are by CBS/YouGov, The Augusta Chronicle and FOX News, and were taken from December 5 to December 17. The rest said they would be “neither”. There evidence is overwhelming that his message is resonating with many Republicans, but polls don’t generally convey depth of commitment. How could Cruz make an unbelievable 21 percent jump from the last Iowa Poll? Chris Christie holds 6% and Jeb Bush with 4%.
His collapse may have something to do with 30 percent of GOP voters now identifying terrorism as their most important issue.
Only 23 percent of all voters would be proud to have Trump as president. “Cruz, it is no surprise to see Dr. Carson’s support diminish”.
Fifty percent of American voters say they would be “embarrassed” if Donald Trump were president, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll. For half of the USA, apparently, the latter might be summed up as a national source of shame.
