Hall of Fame: Seau’s daughter to speak in interview
So, instead of allowing Sydney to give a formal speech, she will be interviewed on stage after all the Seau children unveil Junior’s bronze bust.
The Hall of Fame also said Sydney will represent her father and be interviewed during the Thursday night Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner, broadcast by the NFL Network.
It will still be a very sad day for all, as we wish Junior could be there to make one of his great speeches on his way in to the Hall, but now his wishes will be followed. She will join her three brothers in unveiling Seau’s Hall of Fame bust. “It’s frustrating because the induction is for my father and for the other players, but then to not be able to speak, it’s painful”, Sydney Seau had previously told The New York Times.
The Hall will stick to its policy of showing only a video of a posthumous inductee, but Seau’s highlight video will span 6 minutes, 30 seconds. Having the decision to not allow the family of Seau to speak at Canton was about as tone deaf and obvious as it gets, but at least they’re getting it half right by reversing their decision to ban the family of a legend in the first place.
Thankfully she will have the opportunity to do just that. It wasn’t going to be about this mess. The normal highlight video lasts three minutes. Failure to publicize or communicate the policy helped create a controversy regarding whether Sydney Seau was being silenced, due to the family’s pursuit of a lawsuit against the NFL alleging that concussions triggered Junior Seau’s 2012 suicide. An autopsy determined that he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated hits to the head.
Seau played 20 years in the NFL, mainly suiting up for the San Diego Chargers. The Hall maintains its policy on posthumous inductees; however, the Seau family will have an active role in the legendary linebacker’s induction.
